Betsy and I saw The Phantom of the Opera, movie version, last night. It was very well done.
Don't get me wrong, nothing beats live theater. There is something just mind-blowing about seeing people perform on stage. Seeing Phantom on the big screen is a different experience.
The film format allows the audience to get up close and personal with the characters allowing me to see the emotions playing across each face. Of course it is a movie so they had to play a couple areas a bit differently then on the stage. When seeing a show live, it is acceptable to have a character basically just stand and sing, but that wouldn't go over to well in a theater. Therefore the director had to continually find ways to have the actors move through the scene as they sing. This allowed the movie to keep moving and flow well.
The did an excellent job of communicating the story from the stage to the screen. It's sexy, frightening, exciting and sad and it hits each note perfectly. I highly recommend seeing it, and on the big screen, because a movie as big and bold as Phantom deserves it.
If you don't want to take my word for it here is the Rolling Stone review.
