Recently Ohio passed an amendment banning gay marriage and civil unions. Now I already knew that. But what I hadn't realized is that this ban has further reaching consequences.
The amendment is completely vague and while half of it does specify that marriage is only between one man and one woman, the other half of the amendment only says
"This state and its political subdivisions shall not create or recognize a legal status for relationships of unmarried individuals that intends to approximate the design, qualities, significance or effect of marriage."That means any unmarried individuals.
So if you've been shacking up and avoiding the big marriage plunge, you might have some problems in Ohio.
Some state universities started offering health insurance to the domestic partners of unmarried employees under the state law, the amendment stops any more from doing so.
Domestic-violence protection orders can no longer be used if there's a domestic violence situation with an unmarried couple.
Hell, you're Will and the ability to visit your partner in the hospital may not be lawful anymore.
Pretty insane what a little ambigous language will get you.
