So I got to go to the Indy 500 this year. Betsy's family has a couple sets of tickets, so different people get to go every year. This year I was lucky enough to go.
It was like nothing I have ever seen, or experienced. If you watch it on TV, you're missing a very key part of the race. The sound!!!
When 33 indy cars went racing by at 200+mph, I was speechless and blown away. It is a wall of sound that you feel. Forget trying to have a conversation, the race demands your attention with its relentless, guttural noise. And of course the ever-present crash potential is captivating, too.
All in all the 4 or so hours flew by, and I enjoyed every moment. Of course it did help to have a crew of veterans who knew the ropes in and out. Without them I would've been late, lost, hungry, dehydrated...Hell, I might have died. If you've never been to Indy then make sure you get the skinny from someone who has, because there are some good things to remember.
For instance, make sure you have a parking plan. There is a neighborhood right outside the speedway where you can park in people's yards for a small fee. Who would've guessed? Also get going early, because it can be a long walk and there are a lot of pre-race festivities that are pretty cool. Celebrity-intros, stealth bomber fly-overs, Gomer Pyle singing (Florence Henderson, too), and of course all the great people-watching. Finally, make sure you pack some necessities. Food, drink, and some ear-plugs (depending on where you sit). Oh, and I've heard that the toilet paper isn't the best, so maybe throw some in your pack.
So with some pre-planning (oh, and some sunblock) I had an event that I will never forget.

Lew,
Glad you had fun!! Keith was there as well and said it was fun!! Patty's Dad always seems to have extra tickets for sale if you want to go again and not wait for your turn. See you Saturday.
Cousin Mike
Lew...I know when I happen upon a car race while surfing the channels I can't quite understand the excitement but I also know that BEING THERE is a whole different story. I think it is great that you were able have this experience and hearing it first hand from you this past weekend and now reading about it, too, I know it was alot of fun...and it always helps to go to any big event with at least one person who knows the ropes. Cincinnati and Bety's family have been good to you and for you. Makes me happy, too.
Love ya your Virginia Mum
