Download Uproar: Record Industry Goes After Personal Use - washingtonpost.com: "the industry maintains that it is illegal for someone who has legally purchased a CD to transfer that music into his computer."

I can't believe they think they can get away with this. This battle was over back when the VCR came onto the scene. The courts have said time and again that it is legal to make a copy for personal use.

I do my best to stay legal and compensate artists fairly, but I won't stop myself from ripping CDs I own onto my computer. I'm not sharing them online (or at all) and I didn't steal them in the first place, so I don't think there is anything wrong with making a copy for my iPod and as a backup.

I'll be following this case closely...

It'll never happen. Sony tried something like that a while ago and got in big trouble (thank God). They put some "Trojan horse" software on their audio CDs, so that, when you put them in your (Windows) computer drive, it installed some software, without your knowledge, that stopped you from copying (and also did some other collateral damage, I forgot what). Thank God, Sony took a well-deserved heavy hit!
